Professor Emeritus

Policy on Emeritus/Emerita Status

Effective July 1, 2009 the rank of Emeritus was extended to Professors, Associate Professors, Senior Lecturers and Librarians (III & IV) in continuing appointments that have elected to retire or are retired. An individual appointed to these ranks may elect to have the title Emeritus/Emerita and these are reported to the Academic Board each year. Faculty who have held a named chair at retirement are also eligible to request that their Emeritus title includes the name of the Chair. For example, the ‘Smith Professor’ could become the ‘Smith Professor Emeritus’. Such titles require the approval of the Provost.

Faculty members who retire early and who hold one of the above ranks at retirement are also eligible for appointment as Emeritus or Emerita.

Individuals who are re-appointed to a post-retirement position, whether full-time or part-time, are eligible to hold the rank of Emeritus/Emerita as well as the recommended rank for the teaching position if different.

Appointment

The following process should be followed:-

  1. Qualified retiring faculty should indicate on the appropriate Notice to Retire form their desire to have the title Emeritus/Emerita conferred upon retirement.
  2. The Provost's office will confirm eligibility.
  3. The award of Emeritus/Emerita will be reported for information to Academic Board at the next session after the faculty member’s retirement date.
  4. After review by Academic Board, newly appointed Emeritus/Emerita faculty receive a letter from the President advising them of their status.
  5. The Business Officer should update the individual’s status in HRIS.
